Approach Notes are tension notes that resolve to chord tones.
‘Approach Notes’ are an extremely common device used to create harmonic tension before resolving to a chord tone. To intensify the tension and release, aim your resolution towards a downbeat, or an anticipation of a downbeat.

It is more important to grasp the underlying principle of harmonic ‘tension and release’ than it is to master every approach tone figure. ‘Tension and release’ is the dynamic concept that keeps music flowing. If everything you played was resolved, there would be little incentive to move! These exercises are designed to be models on which you can build. Work to internalize the concept of ‘tension and release’ and then make it yours.
